Soft boiled

“Soft-boiled” often refers to a cooking method for eggs. In this method, eggs are cooked in their shells in boiling water, but only for a period long enough that the yolk remains partially liquid and the white has just set. A typical soft-boiled egg is cooked for about four to six minutes. They are a popular choice for breakfast and can be served in an egg cup, making it easier to eat them with a spoon. Are you looking to know how to cook them or interested in some recipes that include soft-boiled eggs?

get on with it

Got it! To make a perfect soft-boiled egg, follow these steps:

  1. Bring water to a boil: Use a pot large enough to accommodate the eggs in a single layer. Fill it with enough water to cover the eggs by at least an inch.
  2. Lower the eggs into boiling water: Once the water is boiling, gently lower the eggs into the water using a spoon or ladle. This helps prevent the shells from cracking.
  3. Set a timer: For a soft yolk and set whites, cook the eggs for about 6 minutes. Adjust the time slightly depending on your preference for the yolk’s firmness.
  4. Prepare an ice bath: While the eggs are cooking, prepare a bowl of ice water.
  5. Cool the eggs: As soon as the timer goes off, transfer the eggs to the ice water to stop the cooking process. Leave

a soft boiled egg

A realistic image of a soft-boiled egg served in a classic egg cup. The egg is cracked open slightly, showing a perfectly cooked, runny yolk. The egg white is set and gleaming, with a smooth, glossy texture. The egg cup is porcelain, simple and elegant, placed on a wooden breakfast table with soft morning light casting gentle shadows. The background is softly blurred to emphasize the egg in the foreground.

Can you detect my frustration with AI image generation!

At first glance it looked as though this egg didn’t have a shell at all, which was quite amusing.

But what I really hate about this egg, and the 5 others DALL-E cooked up for me, is that it looks like someone’s plonked a raw egg yolk on top of a poached egg and stuffed it into a shell.

I tried to create a prompt that would produce the right result.

soft boiled An image of a soft boiled hens brown egg that has been soft boiled. There’s a marmite soldier dipped into the soft yolk of the egg, causing the yolk to overflow down the side of the shell.

Depict an inviting scene of a soft boiled brown hen’s egg cracked at the top, its soft, golden yolk slightly oozing out, revealing a more liquid interior. A delicious roasted bread soldier, coated with a layer of thick marmite, is being dipped into the creamy yolk, which further causes the yolk to cascade pleasantly down the shell, emphasizing the freshness of the egg.

Now if that won’t put you off your breakfast nothing will.

I have to admit one thing; the shell’s better.

This is what a soft boiled egg should look like.
